What If I Buy An Out Of State Used Vehicle?

Any vehicle that was last registered out of state and is not an exempt vehicle must have an emissions test conducted before it can be permanently registered in Connecticut. Your vehicle can be tested using your current out of state registration. If necessary, you may obtain a temporary Connecticut registration for the purpose of having the vehicle emissions tested. Go to your nearest DMV Branch Office to apply for the temporary registration.

If the purchased vehicle will remain out of state and consequently be unavailable for emission testing, contact the Emissions Hotline at 1-888-828-8399  for information.  Upon permanent registration you will be notified of your vehicle’s next scheduled due date.  If your vehicle is still out of state at this time, you must apply for a time extension.
