What do I do with my old emissions sticker?

Remove the existing windshield emissions sticker from your vehicle. The date on the sticker is no longer valid. The Connecticut Emissions Test Program will not be issuing stickers. Connecticut’s Emissions Testing Program uses registration based compliance enforcement and electronically stores test nformation.. The scheduled date for your emissions test will now be mailed to you and you will be able to access your test date online through our test lookup database.

How does bringing my vehicle in for an emissions inspection improve air quality?

Connecticut’s Emissions Test Program fights air pollution by reducing vehicle emissions through the identification of high-emitting vehicles and requiring them to be repaired. Vehicle emissions account for more than 40 percent of the air pollution that affects the health of all the State’s residents, especially children, the elderly, asthma and bronchitis sufferers and people who work and play outdoors.

Prior to registering your vehicle in Connecticut, you must obtain an emissions test for the vehicle unless it is exempt from testing.

What if I buy a Connecticut used vehicle?

Vehicles sold by private parties are not required to be in compliance at the time of sale. To find out if the vehicle you are buying is in compliance, check the test date on-line, or call (888)828-8399. Have the vehicle identification number (VIN) ready when you call. If the vehicle test date is not expired, the vehicle is in compliance and will not have to be tested until that date. If your test date does not appear on ctemissions.com or the hotline cannot find your test date, please call the DMV Emissions Division at (203)805-6244 to verify your VIN.

If the vehicle is not in compliance you will need to have the vehicle tested within 30 days of the date that you register the vehicle. You will not receive a notice for testing. A late fee will not be assessed if the newly purchased vehicle is tested within the required 30 days. Any assessed late fees will be billed by the Department of Motor Vehicles or added to your vehicle’s registration renewal.  They are not collected at the test center.

Note: Some vehicles may be exempt from emissions testing. Please see list of exempt vehicles.

What if I buy an out of state used vehicle?

Any vehicle that was last registered out of state and is not an exempt vehicle must have an emissions test conducted before it can be registered in Connecticut. You may obtain a temporary registration, if necessary, for the purpose of having the vehicle emissions tested. Go to your nearest DMV Branch Office to apply for the temporary plate.

What if I don't agree with my test results?

You also have the option of obtaining another test at any other Official Emissions Test Center, but you will be required to pay the $20 test fee.
