Check For a Catalytic Converter

Vehicles will also be visually inspected for the presence of the catalytic converter. The catalytic converter provides a post-combustion control of vehicle emissions. Post-combustion emission control devices clean up the exhaust after the fuel has been burned but before the gases exit the tailpipe. It must be fully intact for your vehicle to be considered for an emissions test.

Removal of or tampering with a catalytic converter is a federal offense. If your vehicle is missing a catalytic converter, it will fail the emissions test.
